MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The Memphis Tiger football team, which has participated in four bowl games over the past five seasons, enhanced its chances to compete for future Conference USA Championships with the signing of 19 new players during Wednesday's National Signing Day.

"We set out with a goal to fill some very specific needs on our football squad," said head coach Tommy West. "I really believe that we accomplished our goal. We were very limited in the number of scholarships we had to offer and had to be creative in how we put them together.

Memphis signed five players during the month of December. Junior college transfer Arkelon Hall, Steven Joachim and Colton Jenkins signed with the Tigers and enrolled in school in January, as did transfers DajLeon Farr and Derrick Odom. Hall, Joachim and Jenkins all come from the junior college ranks, while Farr transferred from the University of Miami and Odom from LSU. They will all participate with the Tigers during spring practice.

"December was a big key for us," West stated. "We put together an outstanding class during that period and just continued to build on that class as we moved toward National Signing Day. I am really excited about how we improved this football team."

The Tigers were indeed successful in the Memphis/Mid-South area landing five outstanding prep recruits. Wide receivers Marcus Hightower and Marcus Rucker from Whitehaven High, as well as linebacker Ricky Holloway from Fayette-Ware High, Dontari Poe, a defensive lineman from Wooddale High and Donald Law, a tight end from Hamilton High.

In total, 11 offensive players inked with Memphis, including junior college quarterback Hall, wide receivers Curtis Johnson, Joachim, Hightower and Rucker and running backs Brandon Ross and Greg Ray. The offensive front was solidified with tight ends Law and Farr and offensive linemen Kindly Jacques and Larry Landry.

Memphis bolstered its defensive front with the addition of defensive linemen Colton, Poe and Frank Trotter of Mobile, Ala., and defensive end Demetrius Culpepper from East Mississippi Community College. Holloway and Odom are both slated to work as inside linebackers, while defensive backs Clay Lee and Mike Shepard round out the 2008 class. Lee is from Orlando, Fla., and Shepard played for Citronelle High in Alabama.
