MEMPHIS, Tenn.- The honors continue to pile up for Kevin Walsh. Two days after being named to College Soccer News' National Team of the Week and being selected Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week, the junior midfielder was named to Soccer America's National Team of the Week.
Walsh is the first player in Tiger soccer history to garner all three honors in the same week. Walsh is also the first Tiger to be honored by Soccer America since Memphis soccer alumnus Daniel Dobson in 2004.
Walsh notched two goals and two assists in three games last week, leading the Tigers (who are ranked 15th by the NSCAA and 29th by College Soccer News) to a 3-0-0 record. The Shrule, Ireland, native notched an assist in a 2-0 win over Central Arkansas on Sept. 12. Walsh then recorded an important insurance goal in a 3-1 win at Air Force on Sept. 15. Walsh went on to score the Tigers' first goal and assist on the game-winner in a 2-1 win at Denver on Sept. 17.
Walsh, who transferred to Memphis last spring from cross-town Christian Brothers University, has given the Tigers a reliable scoring threat through the season's first eight games. Walsh has a five-game scoring streak and has notched a goal or assist in each of the Tigers' seven wins. He is tied for second in the nation in assists per game (0.88) and 15th in points per game (2.13). Walsh has helped the Tigers create the 14th best scoring offense in the country (2.5 goals per game).
Walsh and the Tigers will look to continue their recent success when they open conference play against South Carolina (ranked No.11 by NSCAA and No. 16 by CSN). Kickoff for the Sunday afternoon match is set for 12:00 p.m. central time.
