TULSA, Okla. - Two big first innings propelled Tulsa to a doubleheader sweep over the University of Memphis softball team on Saturday at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex. TU opened the day with a 7-4 victory and followed with a 10-0 five-inning shutout.
The Tigers (24-28, 4-17), who have lost seven straight, gave up four runs in the first inning to start both contests after struggling to throw strikes. A combined eight walks were allowed in the first inning as Memphis gave up 15 free bases on the day.
Sophomore Leigh Rowan led the team with a 2-for-3 performance in game one with three RBI and a run scored. Senior Melissa Nance singled in both contests and had an RBI in game one.
Freshman Rayna McClinton struggled in her 12th start of the season in game one, giving up five walks through the first seven batters. The RHP fell to 5-5 on the season after allowing four runs on no hits in two-thirds innings of work. Freshman Janelle Valle pitched the final five and a third innings in relief and gave up three runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
TU (33-22, 13-10) drew three-straight walks in the first inning off McClinton to load the bases with one out. After coming one strike away from getting out of the jam, Kailey Yarmer and Lindsey Tower drew back-to-back RBI walks to score two. Kelly Chapman hit a single through the left side to score two more runs.
Tulsa scored two more runs in the second inning to increase its lead to six. Lauren Lindsay took a ball to the hands to begin the frame and later scored from third on a hit to left field by Sara Dyer. Brooke Smart then knocked in Christian Timmons on a sacrifice fly to right.
Memphis cut the TU lead to two with four runs in the fourth inning led by a bases clearing double from Rowan. Junior Leandra Hines led off the inning with her second-straight walk and advanced on an infield single by freshman Kailey Kassner. A misplay on a sac bunt by junior Tori Gross loaded the bases for Rowan's one-out double to right center. Nance ended the scoring drive with a two-out single up the middle to score Rowan from second.
Timmons knocked in the seventh run for Tulsa in the sixth inning on a single to deep short that scored Chapman from third.
Game two began eerily similar to the first contest with TU scoring four runs on two hits and three walks. Two walks sandwiched between a single loaded the bases with no outs for the Golden Hurricane. Smart brought in the first run after being hit by the pitch and Vice followed with an RBI walk. Yarmer knocked in two runs with a single through the right side.
Tulsa scored four more runs in the third inning to increase its lead to eight. Three walks to the first four batters loaded the bases with one out. After the Tigers got the second out at home on a fielder's choice, Lindsay drew a RBI walk. Timmons then reached base on a fielding error that preserved the inning and advanced the runners. Dyer followed with a two-run single to center field.
Two more runs scored in the fourth inning for the Golden Hurricane. Chapman knocked in the first run on a single to center field and later scored the second run on the Tigers' second error in the inning.
Freshman Kimber Bossom (10-15) suffered the loss, giving up five earned runs on five hits with 10 walks.
